Steyer Leads California Governor Candidates on Environmental Issues

WASHINGTON— The Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund released an environmental scorecard today evaluating the five top-polling candidates for California governor on environmental issues.

Tom Steyer, who has pledged to hold the fossil fuel industry and monopoly utilities accountable, received an “A” grade, while both Republican candidates received the lowest scores.

“California has long been a national and global leader on climate and environmental protection. Now more than ever, we need the next governor to strengthen the state’s responses to the climate and biodiversity crises,” said Kassie Siegel, climate political director at the Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund. “Our analysis of the candidates shows that Tom Steyer leads the pack on the environment. His record and platform demonstrate the strongest commitment to protecting people’s health, clean air and water, and a livable climate, not corporate polluters.”

The candidates were assessed on key issues, including holding the fossil fuel industry accountable, protecting frontline community voices and public input, fighting monopolistic utilities, conserving California’s lands and wildlife, and safeguarding people from toxic pollution.

The two Republican candidates received failing grades because of their pro-fossil fuel, deregulatory agendas and promises to dismantle California’s nation-leading environmental standards. Rep. Eric Swalwell received a C grade, the lowest of the three Democratic contenders due to his record in Congress and his campaign’s deprioritization of all environmental issues, none of which appears on his campaign website.

Former Rep. Katie Porter received a B+ grade based on her positive environmental record in Congress, but a de-emphasis on environmental issues during her gubernatorial run. Steyer received an A based on his campaign adopting and promoting clear, strong environmental pledges should he become governor, as well as his past positions on climate and the environment.
